Clay is a commodity mineral, so the difference between suppliers is not the material. It is the pack construction, the honesty of the capacity claim, and whether the documents that arrive actually describe what is in the bag.
Bentonite is a rock made mostly of montmorillonite clay, and in desiccant trade the two words are used interchangeably. It is activated by controlled drying, which opens the pore structure so it adsorbs water vapour. It arrives as grey to brown granules, is non-toxic and non-flammable, and holds up to about 25 percent of its own weight in water vapour at 25 degrees Celsius and 90 percent relative humidity.
Clay is the cheapest common desiccant per kilogram. On a container of machined parts or hand tools, protecting every carton with silica gel may cost more than the moisture risk justifies. Clay lets the whole load be covered, with silica gel kept for the lines that genuinely need it.
Clay holds less water per gram than silica gel and its advantage narrows at higher temperatures. It also has no indicating version, so a pack that has already done its work looks identical to a fresh one. For cargo where a failed desiccant means a rejected shipment, silica gel with an orange indicating fraction is the safer specification.

For clay, the safety data sheet and lot certificate of analysis are obtained from the clay source and passed on with the order. Activated clay normally clears under HS 2508.10 or 3802.90 depending on the activation and how your broker classifies it, which is a different heading from silica gel at 2811.22. Confirm the code with your own broker before the commercial invoice is issued, because a desiccant shipment that mixes clay and silica gel may need both lines.
