Usually both. Clay in the cartons covers the bulk at a lower cost per kilogram, and silica gel goes with the lines carrying unpainted or polished surfaces. A hanging strip above the load handles the container air separately.
It removes the moisture in the carton air, which is what causes the spotting buyers reject. It cannot help if the pieces are packed with residual moisture, coolant, or fingerprints on them, so packing hygiene comes first.
No. There is no minimum order quantity on silica gel or clay, and a trial quantity can be supplied before any bulk commitment.
Clay is the lowest-cost common desiccant per kilogram, but it holds about 25 percent of its own weight against silica gel's roughly 33 percent, so it needs more weight for the same job. On a full container of coated goods the arithmetic usually favours clay; on unpainted parts it usually does not.
