Blue indicating silica gel is the cobalt(II) chloride type. The cobalt salt is what makes the beads blue when dry and pink when saturated, and it is also why the product is restricted in the EU under REACH Annex XVII and in the UK under UK REACH. Standard silica gel is white and gives no visible sign of saturation. Blue indicating gel is the same silica substrate impregnated with cobalt(II) chloride, which is blue when anhydrous and turns pink as the bead takes on water. The change is gradual, so a mid-tone lilac means the charge is partly used. Adsorption capacity is the same as white gel, up to about 33% of its own weight at 25 °C and 90% RH.
Cobalt(II) chloride is classified under EU REACH as a Category 1B carcinogen and a Substance of Very High Concern, and Annex XVII restricts its use as a humidity indicator in desiccants placed on the EU market. UK REACH carries the same restriction. That is why blue gel has largely left European packaging, and why an EU or UK buyer asking for blue is steered to a cobalt-free alternative. Blue gel is still specified in some markets that have not adopted the EU restriction, most often as the refill charge in transformer dehydrating breathers, where maintenance crews read the colour through a sight glass, and in laboratory desiccator jars and instrument cases, where the operator handles beads directly and follows the SDS. Cobalt-free orange indicating gel uses an organic indicator instead of a cobalt salt. Dry beads are orange and turn green, then dark, as they saturate, so the visual check is just as clear through a breather sight glass or a jar wall. Capacity, bead sizes, packing, and regeneration behaviour match blue gel. For any buyer who does not have a hard specification for cobalt blue, orange is the recommended order.
Indicating gel of either colour can be regenerated by heating, typically at 110-130 °C until the dry colour returns; higher temperatures risk degrading the indicator. Regenerated beads lose a little capacity each cycle. Blue gel should be handled with gloves, kept out of food and pharmaceutical secondary packaging, and disposed of according to the SDS and local rules. Sealed shelf life for both types is 24-36 months.
Give the country of use first, because it decides whether blue can be supplied at all. Then state bead size (1-3mm or 2-5mm), quantity in kg or number of breather charges, packing (25kg bags, jars, or sachets), and whether you need an SDS, batch COA, and composition statement. If the answer to the country question is the EU or the UK, the quote will come back for cobalt-free orange instead.
